Shandong Completes Nation’s First Provincial 1,000 kV UHV Dual Loop Grid, to Be Fully Operational in October

On July 27, the final section of wire erection was finished for the Yantai-Weihai 1,000 kV UHV Project in Shandong, marking the full completion of China’s first provincial UHV dual loop grid. Stretching 1,197 kilometers in total, the power line covers five cities in Jiaodong including Yantai, Qingdao and Rizhao, and is scheduled to go into full operation in October.

As the world’s first backbone UHV power grid tailored for the outward transmission of nuclear power and offshore wind power, the project breaks Shandong’s long-standing one-way power transmission pattern of "power delivery from western to eastern regions" and enables two-way interconnection of green electricity within the province. Upon completion, bottlenecks restricting the consumption of Jiaodong offshore wind power and Haiyang nuclear power will be fully resolved. The province’s capacity to absorb new energy sources will rise by over 30%, cutting annual carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10 million tons. Industry insiders noted that the project offers a model solution for coastal provinces nationwide to integrate high shares of clean energy into power grids.
